Many companies have pulled away from manufacturing fire suppression systems using halon, based on the environmental impact and many companies that require fire suppression systems have been looking for an eco-friendly system. This creating a need for an alternate solution. Halon alternatives need to be capable of extinguishing most fire types, but also need to ensure safety for people and equipment. Since companies have been reducing the use of halon-based fire suppression, various fire suppression technologies and agents have been introduced to the industry. One of them that many should be interested in is FirePro, an Aerosol Fire Suppression System.
How Does FirePro Aerosol Fire Suppression Work
FirePro fire suppression systems use a mix of gaseous matter and microparticles to engulf the protected area. The particles are in a condensed form until released from the device. Upon discharge, a chain reaction generates gaseous matter and solid particles to suppress the fire.
To successfully suppress a fire, the fire suppression system must be capable of breaking the “fire pyramid”. That means that the fire suppression chemicals need to reduce the fuel, eliminate heat and oxygen, or interrupt a chain reaction. When there is sufficient fuel, oxygen, and heat present, a fire will continue to burn.
Aerosol fire suppression systems operate by removing heat in the following ways;
- Aerosol systems discharge large microparticles that inundate the flame.
- Upon contact, these particles cool the flame and absorb the heat to suppress the fire.
Aerosol fire suppression systems can also operate by disturbing a chain reaction:
- Aerosol particles consisting of potassium nitrate acts as an oxidizer,
- These particles connect with the free radicals that sustain the fire’s combustion to produce by-product molecules, such as potassium hydroxide and water,
- This disturbs the combustion process until the fire is out.
The Effectiveness Of FirePro Aerosol Fire Suppression Systems
Aerosol fire suppression systems can be an effective solution for suppressing Class A, B, C and F fires. The level of effectiveness also depends on the particle concentration near the flame, the type of fuel involved, and the location of other flammable materials.
Aerosol fire suppression systems can be furnished with either automatic or electrical fire detection and activation. Aerosol fire suppression is available for both a total flooding environment and for local applications.
The Advantages Of FirePro Aerosol Fire Suppression Systems
FirePro fire suppression systems offer various advantages to designers, installers, and clients which defines it as a desirable suppression system, earning large scale acceptance from both engineering societies and clients.
For The Designer:
- Simple to design as it is unaffected by ambient conditions or other design factors that could include complexity during the design stage.
- Modular as it can be easily altered, expanded, or relocated.
- Feasible to adopt to applications that were financially or technically challenging to adopt using traditional technologies.
For The Installer:
- Pressure Integrity Tests for the enclosure are not required.
- The installation is fast and simple.
- No piping is required.
For The Client:
- No storage space of cylinder banks is required.
- No pressure test required for components over system lifecycle.
- Up to 15 years lifetime.
- Safe for people and the environment.
