How Li-Ion battery safety works: 
In the event of a Li-Ion battery fire, the FirePro active agent suppresses the ongoing fire and neutralizes the electrolyte’s decomposition. Using Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) it  forms stable products such as KF and KHF2. This neutralizing action prevents the formation of highly flammable gases such as Hydrogen (H2). This ultimately allows the temperature in the enclosure to drop below the threshold necessary for thermal runaway to sustain itself.
There are inherent risks with Li-Ion systems. To understand why FirePro is different from the rest of the market, we need to gage an understanding on the present markets status.

 

 What the market is doing: 

The present market is booming with the production of Li-ion systems and many industries have diverted into this space without necessarily having any former specialization. Fire suppression system effectiveness on particular batteries is run either by manufacturers (i.e. FirePro) and or OEMs of the batteries . Some of our competitors openly acknowledge that their agent (conventional) will not extinguish a Li-ion fire whereas some other aerosols use agent densities of about 100gr/m3 based on small-scale tests they conducted with Li-ion. On the other hand, some OEMs are not concerned with thermal runaway and only wish to protect their system from electrical induced fires. The lithium industry is already huge and is growing at a phenomenal rate annually. Cost considerations are often the motivation for a fire suppression solution, albeit NOT the best or correct solution.

 

 How FirePro differentiates itself from the market: 

FirePro have conducted numerous tests with Li-ion since 2016. Li-ion fires behave very differently depending on how the breakdown is induced and the types of chemicals used. For example, a thermal runaway fire resulting from mechanical damage and another resulting from excessive heat or overcharge is radically different. The energy load of a battery system will exponentially increase the amount of energy released (in case of thermal runaway) henceforth the fire suppression system size must increase accordingly. Considering that we understand the risks involved with lithium, we always advise our partners to design the system with a conservative approach of circa 200g/m3. This density takes into considering the gross volume of the space, which in practical terms results in a much higher concentration due to the space occupied by the batteries.
